Derek Dixon, best known for playing Dale on The Oval, has broken his silence after filing a $260 million lawsuit against filmmaker Tyler Perry, alleging sexual harassment, assault and retaliation. In his first public comments, Dixon revealed that he has received death threats since coming forward, further highlighting the challenges faced by male victims. “This is why people, especially men, don’t come forward,” Dixon said. “I was too afraid to come forward. I knew it would be awful. And I was right.”
Dixon stated that he initially tried to justify the alleged misconduct as part of the entertainment industry’s darker side. He said he told himself it was something to endure in order to succeed. However, after years of silence, he decided that the emotional and psychological toll was too much and chose to speak out.
The lawsuit outlines multiple incidents where Perry allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior. Dixon claims that Perry promised to advance his career, including producing his pilot and offering him major roles. He alleges that these promises came with a coercive undertone, including unwanted touching, being propositioned for “guiltless sex,” and being groped during filming. In one instance, Dixon claims Perry climbed into his bed uninvited while they were staying at the same guesthouse.
Dixon says that after filing the lawsuit, he received both support and backlash. The threats, he says, are part of a toxic culture that discourages male victims from speaking up. He emphasized that his decision to come forward was not only about personal justice, but also about helping others in the industry who may be suffering in silence.
“My goal is to help ensure that the next generation of actors and creatives don’t have to choose between their dreams and their dignity,” he said. Tyler Perry has denied the allegations through his legal team, calling the lawsuit baseless and an attempt at extortion. He has not personally made a public statement on the matter.
Dixon confirmed that he had attempted to resolve the issue privately before pursuing legal action, but felt those efforts led nowhere. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, includes claims of sexual battery, quid pro quo harassment, emotional distress, and retaliation. It seeks a jury trial and substantial damages. Despite the threats and public scrutiny, Dixon says he remains determined to hold those in power accountable and push for a safer, more respectful industry.
