LeBron James has confirmed that he will join the Philadelphia 76ers for the 2026 to 2027 NBA season, extending his record as the longest serving player in league history with a remarkable 24th campaign. The 41-year-old made the announcement on Friday, bringing an end to his eight-year spell with the Los Angeles Lakers. During his time in Los Angeles, James guided the franchise to the 2020 NBA championship, adding another title to an already legendary career.
Before joining the Lakers, James enjoyed two separate stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he delivered the franchise's first NBA championship in 2016. He also spent four successful seasons with the Miami Heat, winning two league titles and cementing his reputation as one of basketball's greatest players.
Explaining his decision to move to Philadelphia, James said his choice was not driven by financial considerations or personal circumstances. Instead, he emphasized that his passion for competition and desire to win another championship remain the biggest motivations at this stage of his career.
In a message shared on social media, James described the move as the final major decision of his playing career. He said he still has the determination to work hard, make sacrifices and compete at the highest level in pursuit of another NBA title. The four-time NBA champion also expressed confidence that he can help transform the 76ers into genuine championship contenders. He added that he is excited to begin a new chapter with Philadelphia and build a strong connection with the team's passionate supporters.
James has continued to defy expectations despite entering his forties. Last March, he broke Robert Parish's long standing record for the most regular season games played in NBA history, further strengthening his place among the sport's greatest athletes. His performances have remained remarkably consistent, proving that age has done little to slow him down. During the 2025 to 2026 season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists across 60 appearances while continuing to play a leading role for the Lakers.
His impressive form also earned him a record breaking 22nd consecutive NBA All Star selection in February, another milestone in a career filled with historic achievements.
