Coco Gauff reached her first Wimbledon semi-final after producing a resilient comeback to defeat fellow American Jessica Pegula in a gripping three-set contest.
The seventh seed recovered from a difficult start to claim a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory, ending a run of disappointing results on grass and securing her best-ever performance at the All England Club.
Before this year's tournament, Gauff had never advanced beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon and had suffered a first-round exit in 2025. She also arrived in London without a singles victory on grass since reaching the third round of Wimbledon in 2024, making her latest breakthrough even more significant.
The 22-year-old's latest triumph also placed her in the history books. She became the youngest player to reach the semi-finals of all four Grand Slam tournaments since Maria Sharapova achieved the feat at the 2007 French Open.
Reflecting on the milestone, Gauff admitted she was especially pleased because of her previous struggles on the surface.
"It feels really special considering the results I've had of late, especially on this surface," she said.
She added that simply reaching the last four had boosted her confidence on grass, although her ambition remained to lift the Wimbledon title.
The victory marked Gauff's fourth consecutive three-set win at this year's Championships, underlining her determination and ability to battle through difficult moments.
Her performance against Pegula was far from straightforward. Gauff committed four double faults and 17 unforced errors during the opening set, allowing the world number four to take an early advantage. However, she gradually settled into the contest and turned the momentum in her favour.
Pegula had opportunities to extend her lead in the second set after earning several early break points, but she failed to capitalize. Gauff responded by breaking serve to love before recovering from 0-30 while serving for the set to level the match.
The deciding set remained evenly balanced, with both players exchanging momentum. After Pegula briefly fought back, Gauff immediately reclaimed control and broke serve again to move ahead 4-3. She later sealed victory on Pegula's serve with her first match point.
Following the win, Gauff looked toward her team and jokingly asked, "How?" acknowledging even she had been surprised by her ability to overcome the challenge.
Gauff will next face Karolína Muchová, who reached her maiden Wimbledon semi-final by defeating Naomi Osaka 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Muchová produced a composed display, striking 24 winners while limiting her unforced errors to 21, ending Osaka's impressive run and setting up a highly anticipated semi-final clash with Gauff.
