The Williams sisters are back, and they're bringing the partnership that made history with them.
Venus and Serena Williams have received wild card entries into the women's doubles draw at Wimbledon, set to begin July 2, marking their first time competing together at the tournament since 2016. That year, the pair claimed their sixth Wimbledon doubles title as a duo, defeating Tímea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova in the final, capping a partnership that first won the event back in 2000.
The reunion comes as Serena continues her broader comeback to professional tennis, which she announced on June 1 after stepping away from the sport four years ago. The 44-year-old, who shares two daughters with husband Alexis Ohanian, joked about the wave of attention following her announcement, saying she'd need to change her phone number. Ahead of Wimbledon, she teamed up with Victoria Mboko at the Queen's Club tournament in London, winning their opening match in straight sets before an injury forced Mboko to withdraw from the event.
Venus, 45, has been rebuilding her own competitive rhythm since returning to the tour in July 2025 following a 16-month break. After a first-round exit at last year's U.S. Open against Karolína Muchová, her first appearance at that tournament since 2023, she struck an optimistic tone about her form going forward, acknowledging a slow start while expressing pride in her performance.
The sisters last played doubles together at the 2022 U.S. Open, where they fell in the first round. That same year, Serena stepped back from the sport to prioritize her family and venture capital work, a decision she described to Vogue as difficult despite her satisfaction with her career. She reflected then on what she viewed as missed opportunities for additional Grand Slam titles, while affirming that her 23 major wins remained something to be proud of.
With Wimbledon approaching, anticipation is building around what could be one of the most emotional moments of the tournament, as two of the sport's most decorated competitors step back onto Centre Court together for the first time in years.
