Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has officially been named the NBA Most Valuable Player for the 2025-26 season, according to reports from ESPN insider Shams Charania. The award marks a second consecutive MVP title for the Thunder guard and arrives at a crucial moment as Oklahoma City prepares to begin its Western Conference Finals series against the San Antonio Spurs.
Gilgeous-Alexander's latest achievement places him among the league's elite after another dominant season in which he led the Thunder to the NBA's best regular-season record for a second straight year. His consistent performances throughout the campaign helped establish Oklahoma City as one of the league's strongest teams and reinforced his position as one of basketball's biggest stars.
The accomplishment also opens the door for Gilgeous-Alexander to enter rare territory in NBA history. ClutchPoints reporter Brett Siegel highlighted that only three players have managed to win back-to-back MVP awards while also capturing consecutive NBA championships.
Those players are Bill Russell, Michael Jordan and LeBron James. If Oklahoma City can continue its postseason success and secure another title this year, Gilgeous-Alexander could become the fourth player to achieve that milestone.
The Thunder have looked dominant throughout the playoffs, advancing through the opening two rounds without suffering a defeat and entering the Western Conference Finals with an 8-0 postseason record. Their combination of offensive firepower and defensive intensity has made them one of the toughest teams to beat.
While Gilgeous-Alexander remains the centerpiece of Oklahoma City's success, opposing defenses have attempted to slow him down in various ways. During the previous series against the Los Angeles Lakers, frequent double teams limited some of his usual scoring impact. Even so, his influence remained evident as he continued orchestrating the offense and creating opportunities for teammates.
The Thunder now face what many believe could be their biggest challenge of the playoffs against the San Antonio Spurs. San Antonio recently eliminated the Minnesota Timberwolves in six games and also enjoyed success against Oklahoma City during the regular season, winning four of their five meetings.
With Game 1 scheduled in Oklahoma City, the matchup is shaping up to be one of the most highly anticipated conference finals battles in recent years. Gilgeous-Alexander now enters the series carrying not only MVP honors, but also a chance to make even more history.
