After more than ten years of legal dispute, the paternity claim filed by 30-year-old Rymir Satterthwaite against Jay‑Z, real name Shawn Carter, has been formally dismissed with prejudice, meaning Satterthwaite cannot refile the case or seek a DNA test connection to the rapper.

Satterthwaite’s lawsuit alleged that Jay-Z fathered him in the early 1990s following a purported relationship with his late mother, Wanda Satterthwaite, when she was a teenager. The legal effort spanned multiple jurisdictions and included a variety of claims seeking emotional and reputational damages rather than child support.

Throughout the litigation, Jay-Z’s legal team characterised the claims as unsubstantiated and described the filings as part of a long-standing pattern of “harassment.” They pointed to previous dismissals, including in New Jersey, largely on jurisdictional grounds or procedural issues. In court filings, Jay-Z labelled the allegations “fabricated,” asserting that they had been “addressed and rejected in multiple other courts.”

In July 2025, Satterthwaite withdrew a federal lawsuit, citing “behind closed doors” developments. Shortly afterward, a California judge granted a motion to dismiss the case with prejudice, officially barring further action on the claim. The dismissal does not include a public settlement or acknowledgment of paternity.

For Satterthwaite, the move marks the end of a decade-long effort. He has maintained that his focus was always on seeking truth and accountability rather than financial gain. Still, his options now are legally closed. For Jay-Z, the ruling is a legal victory and a public reaffirmation of his insistence that the claims lacked merit.

Social media users say the dismissal with prejudice is significant because it signals “finality” in legal terms. The court has decided that the claim cannot be revived. It allows Jay-Z and his team to move past the protracted litigation and refocus attention on his professional and personal life, including his music, business ventures and family.
