On February 6, 2025, the world united in sweet harmony to celebrate what would have been the 80 th birthday of reggae legend Bob Marley. In an event spearheaded by Young Voices, approximately 8,000 primary school children united in their voices to a medley of Marley’s favorite hits at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena in an awe-inspiring event. This was well beyond the UK, as over 2,000 schools in 50 countries joined in via the internet to create a virtual choir estimated at 300,000 children. The youngsters performed a specially arranged “Marley Magic” medley featuring classics like “One Love,” “Jamming’, and “Three Little Birds.” These songs, imbued with messages of peace, love, and unity, resonated deeply as the children’s voices carried Marley’s enduring philosophies across continents.
I know my dada would be overjoyed that his words of freedom, love and unity are being sung by so many beautiful young voices 50 years after he wrote them,” said Cedella Marley, Bob’s daughter. It was not merely a musical event, but a reflection of Marley’s universal appeal and the relevance of his messages across time. Ben Lewis, head of Young Voices, pointed out that in schools all over the world, there is huge enthusiasm. This collective endeavour underlined the bonding force of music and Marley’s abiding legacy.
People who remember the powerful effect of Marley’s music firsthand shared their memories. Liverpool poet Levi Tafari, who saw Marley perform in 1976 at King’s Hall in Belle Vue, called it “life-changing.” He added, “The power and passion he had on stage was something else.” Musician Tommy Blaze referred to Marley as a “massive influence” whose music, though joyful, carried serious messages.
The tune was sung around the world for Marley’s 80 th birthday. A year-long tribute has been pieced together by the Marley family in conjunction with record labels and organizations. Events include special performances, tribute concerts, and a short-film series, “Bob Marley & I,” which launches today-telling personal stories from artists and fans alike who have been impacted by Marley’s music.

Years after his death, his music continues to inspire and unite people across generations and cultures.
