His wife, Savannah James, held court alone in a custom maroon Hanifa pinstripe gown with a mermaid silhouette and midriff cutout, while the NBA star, who served as honorary co-chair at the annual costume ball, was unable to attend the May 5 event in New York City.

LeBron, 40, gave an explanation of why he was not attending the celebrations, which benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art, prior to the event.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, Unfortunately, I won't be able toattend the Met Gala in NY tonight due to my knee injury I sustained at the end of the season, as so many people have been asking and congratulating me on. “Hate to miss an historical event!”

He did, however, express his support for Savannah, who went to the fashion fundraiser alone. Savannah and his children are Bronny, 20, Bryce, 17, and Zhuri, 10.

He went on, As always, my lovely, strong Queen will be there, keeping the castle in place!

LeBron's fellow co-chairs, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, and Colman Domingo, undoubtedly held up well too, each contributing their own special touch to this year's Tailoring Black Style theme, which honors the development of Black men's fashion.

We don't get many chances to tell people that they are important. It matters how you put that s--t on it. It matters how you appear and represent yourself. Colman told Zuri Hall of E! during the event. I want to ensure that everyone is standing in this space together so we can stand up a little taller, especially in our climate right now.”

On May 5, 2025, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City hosted the annual Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year’s event honored 300 years of Black fashion and dandyism, drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion. The gala also marked the opening of the Costume Institute’s first exhibition solely devoted to designers of color.

Fashion icon and supermodel, Naomi Campbell has taken to Instagram to share an open letter directed to Anna Wintour, vogue editor-in-chief  and reveal her reasons for not attending the 2025 Met Gala. This year’s  theme and the dress code was “Tailored For You” . It was inspired by Barnard professor and author Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.” Her book examines the importance and influence of a fashion icon: the Black dandy.
