Grammy-winning soul legend D’Angelo, celebrated for shaping the sound of neo-soul through timeless hits like _Brown Sugar_ and _Untitled (How Does It Feel)_, has died at the age of 51 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. His family confirmed that the singer, born Michael Eugene Archer, “departed this life today, October 14th, 2025,” following “a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer.”
“The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life,” his loved ones said in a statement. “We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.”
Born in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo displayed musical brilliance from an early age. The son of a Pentecostal minister, he began playing the piano at three and performed alongside his father in church by thetime he was five. As a teenager, he formed local groups such as Three of a Kind and Michael Archer and Precise, later earning first place at Harlem’s famed Amateur Night at the Apollo.
In 1995, he released his debut album _Brown Sugar_, which helped define the neo-soul era by blending classic R&B with hip-hop rhythms. His 2000 follow-up, _Voodoo_, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and earned two Grammys, including Best R&B Album. The video for _Untitled (How Does It Feel)_, showing the singer against a stark black backdrop, made him a global sex symbol.
After years away from the spotlight, he returned in 2014 with _Black Messiah_, which won another Grammy for Best R&B Album and was hailed as a masterpiece of its genre. In 2024, he collaborated with Jay-Z on “I Want You Forever” for _The Book of Clarence_ soundtrack, and longtime friend Raphael Saadiq had revealed that he was “excited” about working on new music.
Tributes poured in from across the music world. DJ Premier wrote, “Such a sad loss to the passing of D’Angelo. We have so many great times. Gonna miss you so much. Sleep peacefully D’. Love you KING.” D’Angelo is survived by his three children. His former partner, soul singer Angie Stone, with whom he shared a son, died earlier this year in a car accident.
