Lizzo has opened up about the challenges of public scrutiny and the lessons she has learned after becoming the subject of harassment and discrimination lawsuits.

The Grammy winning singer discussed her experiences while speaking with Willie Geist in an interview that aired on Sunday Today on October 4.

Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Jefferson, acknowledged that public perception has changed following the legal controversies that surrounded her in recent years.

She explained that she has had to accept that there is now a version of Lizzo that exists in the public sphere that she cannot completely control.

According to the singer, the world can influence the narrative surrounding her, but she believes she still has control over who she truly is.

That perspective has influenced the way she responds to criticism. Lizzo said she does not see herself as someone who needs to constantly fight against every negative claim or perception.

Instead, she described herself as a lover rather than a fighter.

The singer also reflected on the entertainment industry, describing it as a "headline game" in which public attention can be shaped by the number of stories circulating about a celebrity.

She said she wants the headlines surrounding her to focus on the things she is proud of and the work she has actually done.

Lizzo's comments come three years after she faced two lawsuits connected to allegations made by former members of her team. In August 2023, three former backup dancers accused the singer of sexual harassment, weight shaming, disability discrimination and creating what they described as a hostile working environment.

Lizzo denied the allegations at the time, describing them as false and outrageous.

The legal disputes have remained part of the public conversation surrounding the singer. According to the information provided, some claims were dismissed in December 2025, while another lawsuit filed by former wardrobe assistant Asha Daniels was dismissed by a Los Angeles judge in September.

Following the dismissal, Lizzo said she felt relieved and maintained that the truth was important to her.

Despite the difficult experiences, the singer said she has chosen to view what happened as an opportunity for personal growth and self reflection.

She explained that difficult experiences can force people to confront parts of themselves they may not like and work towards becoming better versions of themselves.

For Lizzo, the experience has ultimately become part of a broader personal journey involving fame, criticism, resilience and self acceptance.

Her latest comments suggest that rather than attempting to control every public narrative surrounding her, she is focusing more closely on her identity, her work and the person she continues to become.
