Smith remains in custody at the Hunt County Detention Center, according to the records. No bond has been set.
Smith is a two-time NBA champion, winning both titles while playing alongside LeBron James. He captured his first championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 before winning another title with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. He retired from professional basketball following the 2020 season.
The former guard has previously faced legal issues. In 2009, Smith was involved in a car accident that killed his friend. According to Yahoo Sports, he was later sentenced to 90 days in jail.
Smith also made headlines in 2020 after video footage showed him confronting and assaulting a man in Los Angeles. TMZ Sports reported that Smith punched and kicked the unidentified man during the altercation.
Following the incident, Smith told TMZ that the confrontation occurred after the man allegedly broke the windows of his truck. He denied that the incident was motivated by race and said he chased the man after discovering the damage to his vehicle.
Smith later shifted his focus to education. In 2021, he enrolled at North Carolina A&T State University, where he pursued a degree in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Applied Cultural Thought. He graduated in May.
Smith has remained connected to the basketball world since retiring from the NBA. He has also maintained relationships with former teammates and figures from his championship years, including James.
