Academy Award winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has addressed the criticism surrounding her casting as Helen of Troy in The Odyssey, the upcoming epic film directed by Christopher Nolan. The actress defended both the film and Nolan’s vision, saying critics should remember that the story is rooted in mythology and not historical fact.

Nyong’o, who will reportedly portray both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra, spoke about the backlash during an interview with Elle magazine. Her casting sparked heated debate online after it was announced, with some critics questioning the decision to cast a Black actress in the role of Helen, a figure traditionally imagined as white in depictions of ancient Greek mythology.

Responding to the criticism, Nyong’o said she fully supports Nolan’s interpretation of the story and the direction he has chosen for the film. She explained that the cast reflects the diversity of the modern world and emphasized that The Odyssey is a mythological story that spans different worlds and ideas.

“I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world,” Nyong’o said in the interview.

The actress also made it clear that she does not intend to spend time defending her casting choices against online criticism. According to her, backlash is inevitable whether she chooses to engage with it or not.

“It’s quite something to be a part of The Odyssey, because it is so grand. It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time,” she added.

The controversy intensified after billionaire businessman Elon Musk publicly criticized the casting on X, formerly Twitter. Musk accused Nolan of insulting Greek people and argued that casting Nyong’o as Helen of Troy was inappropriate for what he described as a foundational work of European literature.

In one of his posts, Musk stated that while he agreed Nyong’o is beautiful, he believed casting a Black actress as Helen was comparable to casting a white actor to portray Shaka Zulu, the famous leader of the Zulu nation. He later escalated the criticism further by accusing Nolan of being “anti white racist.”

So far, Nolan has not publicly responded to the backlash or Musk’s comments.

Despite the controversy, anticipation for The Odyssey remains extremely high. The film marks another ambitious project for Nolan following the massive success of Oppenheimer, which earned him Academy Awards in 2024. Nolan is also widely celebrated for directing acclaimed films such as Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk and The Dark Knight.

Nyong’o herself remains one of Hollywood’s most respected performers since winning an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave in 2014. She has also appeared in major productions including Black Panther and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The Odyssey will feature an ensemble cast that includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Charlize Theron. The film is scheduled for release in cinemas in both the United States and the United Kingdom on July 17.
