Drake has opened up about a deeply personal family struggle, revealing that his father, Dennis Graham, is battling cancer. The emotional disclosure appears on “Make Them Cry,” the opening track from the rapper’s newly released album, Iceman.
The Canadian superstar, whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham, dropped the project on May 15 alongside two surprise companion albums titled Habibti and Maid Of Honour. While the albums contain reflections on fame, pressure and personal growth, it was the revelation about his father’s health that immediately caught the attention of listeners.
Toward the end of the track, Drake shares a vulnerable moment about the challenges his family is facing. In the lyrics, the 39 year old rapper explains that his father is currently battling cancer and admits there are many things he would rather face than watching his dad go through the illness. He also suggests he is ready to speak more openly about the situation if asked.
Drake did not reveal the specific type of cancer Dennis Graham has been diagnosed with, but the lyrics marked one of the most intimate and emotional moments of his career.
Shortly after the album’s release, Dennis posted a touching photo on Instagram showing himself embracing his son. In the caption, he wrote, “The Ice Man and The Nice Man just doing what we do, don't get it twisted.” Fans quickly filled the comments section with messages of support, prayers and encouragement for the 71 year old musician.
Dennis Graham has long been connected to the music industry. Before becoming widely known as Drake’s father, he worked as a drummer with Dennis Graham and the North Memphis Band and also performed with rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis. In recent years, he returned to making music and released a Father’s Day single in 2021 titled “Father and Son,” inspired by his relationship with Drake.
The emotional theme of family continues throughout “Make Them Cry,” with Drake reflecting on aging, responsibility and the pressures surrounding his career. He raps about nearing 40, dealing with criticism before the album was even released and fighting to maintain his place in the music industry.
He also references his role within his family, describing how he supports both his mother and father while raising his own son, Adonis. In another emotional line, Drake says he now sees his parents as an older couple and reflects on how far they have all come together.
The track gives fans a rare look into Drake’s personal life and the emotional realities behind his global success.
