Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan has officially confirmed that Lupita Nyong’o will take on two major roles in his upcoming epic film The Odyssey. The revelation comes as excitement continues to grow around the highly anticipated project, which has already sparked widespread discussion online because of its ambitious cast, large scale production, and bold creative choices.

According to reports from a recent profile on Nolan, Nyong’o will portray Helen of Troy as well as Helen’s sister Clytemnestra. Helen of Troy is famously known in Greek mythology as the most beautiful woman in the world. In the story, she is married to Menelaus, played by Jon Bernthal, and is blamed for starting a devastating war after being taken away by a prince. Nyong’o’s second role sees her playing Clytemnestra, who is married to Agamemnon, portrayed by Benny Safdie.

The casting announcement has added another layer of intrigue to Nolan’s adaptation of the legendary mythic tale. Fans have closely followed every update surrounding the film, with speculation growing over how Nolan would approach the world of gods and mortals that defines the original story. The director explained that he deliberately chose not to cast actors as the gods of Mount Olympus. Instead, he wanted their presence to be felt through the natural world and through the beliefs of the characters themselves.

Nolan explained that audiences in that historical period would have seen signs of the gods everywhere around them, particularly in violent storms, rough seas, and powerful winds. He believes cinema, especially the IMAX format, allows viewers to feel immersed in those terrifying experiences alongside the characters. Rather than showing literal images of gods, Nolan wants audiences to experience the fear of Poseidon and the dangers of the sea in a more emotional and realistic way.

The film also marks another milestone in Nolan’s career as it becomes the first feature film shot entirely using the IMAX format. The project reportedly carries an estimated budget of around $250 million, but actress Anne Hathaway revealed that the cast embraced modest living arrangements during filming in Sicily in order to keep the focus on the production itself. Hathaway, who plays Penelope, the loyal wife of Odysseus and Queen of Ithaca, said there was “no indulgent nonsense” on set and that everyone was committed to the work.

Nolan also addressed the surprising casting of rapper Travis Scott as a bard in the film. The director explained that he wanted to acknowledge how stories like The Odyssey were originally passed down through oral poetry, comparing that tradition to modern rap music.

The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, while Tom Holland takes on the role of Telemachus, the hero’s son. Charlize Theron appears as the nymph Calypso, while Robert Pattinson portrays Antinous, one of Penelope’s suitors. The cast also includes Zendaya as Athena, Himesh Patel as Eurylochus, Mia Goth as Melantho, John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Jimmy Gonzales as Cepheus, and Will Yun Lee in an undisclosed role.

As anticipation builds, The Odyssey is already shaping up to be one of the most talked about films of the coming year. The film is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17.
