The entertainment community is mourning the loss of Alex Duong, a versatile actor and stand-up comedian known for his recurring role in the CBS drama Blue Bloods. Duong passed away at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica following a courageous year-long battle with a rare and
aggressive form of cancer. He was 42.
His passing was confirmed by close family friend Hilarie Steele via a GoFundMe page established to support his medical expenses. According to Steele, Duong entered septic shock on Friday evening and died peacefully the following morning, surrounded by his loved ones. In a poignant final moment, Duong was reportedly alert enough to say goodbye to his five-year-old daughter, Everest. Born in Dallas in 1984, Duong built a multifaceted career that spanned two decades in Los Angeles. He was perhaps most recognizable to
television audiences as Sonny Le, a formidable gang leader on Blue Bloods, appearing across three seasons alongside Donnie Wahlberg. His extensive television credits also included appearances on Dexter, The Young and the Restless, Pretty Little Liars, 90210, and Mad TV.
Beyond his dramatic work, Duong was a fixture in the West Hollywood comedy scene. A regular at The Comedy Store, he was known for his sharp wit and fearless stage presence. He appeared on Jeff Ross Presents Roast Battle and served as a writer for the Netflix series Historical Roasts. Before his illness, Duong had been slated for a 41-state stand-up tour, including dates with The Daily Show correspondent Ronny Chieng.
Duong’s health struggle began in early 2025 when a persistent headache and a bulging eye led to a diagnosis of alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. The malignant mass blocked blood flow to his optic nerve, causing permanent vision loss in his left eye. Despite undergoing intensive radiation and chemotherapy, the cancer eventually metastasized to his spine and brain.
Throughout his illness, the comedy community rallied behind him, organizing benefit shows featuring performers like Atsuko Okatsuka and Ronny Chieng. Following the news of his death, Jeff Ross paid tribute on Instagram, calling it a “BIG loss” for the comedy family. Alex Duong is survived by his wife, Christina, and their daughter, Everest. A celebration of his life is currently being planned by his family and colleagues.
