Internet sensation IShowSpeed, born Darren Jason Watkins Jr., achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first individual Black content creator to surpass 50 million subscribers on YouTube. The record-breaking moment occurred live on his 21 st birthday while the streamer was in Lagos, Nigeria, as part of his widely publicized “Speed Does Africa” tour.

The achievement marks the climax of an extraordinary period of growth for the Cincinnati native. Speed, who hit 10 million subscribers in July 2022, saw his channel skyrocket in early 2026, gaining nearly 3 million subscribers in the first three weeks of January alone. His global tour, which began in late December 2025 and has touched over 15 countries including Kenya, Algeria, and South Africa, has been a primary catalyst for this surge in viewership.

The historic moment was captured during a high-energy livestream on the streets of Lagos. At approximately 6:00 PM local time, as thousands of viewers watched the sub- counter tick upward in real-time, Speed halted his security convoy by the roadside. Amidst a crowd of cheering fans and local residents singing “Happy Birthday,” he officially crossed the 50 million mark. Visibly emotional, the streamer celebrated by shoving his face into a birthday cake and thanking his global audience. “50 million on my birthday, chat,” he told his viewers. “That is the best birthday gift I could ever ask for.”

The Lagos leg of his journey was managed by the culture and entertainment agency The Plug, which facilitated viral interactions such as a visit to the Nike Art Gallery and a meeting with Mama Nike Davies-Okundaye. During his time in Nigeria, Speed was also bestowed with the Yoruba name “Mojọ́láolúwà” and sampled local staples like spicy jollof rice, showcasing the cultural immersion that has come to define his 2026 content.

The milestone places IShowSpeed in the top 100 most-subscribed channels on the platform, following his recognition by Rolling Stone as the “Most Influential Creator of 2025.” While he remains behind overall individual leaders like MrBeast, his achievement as the first Black individual creator to reach the 50-million-subscriber tier is seen as a watershed moment for the global creator economy. Looking ahead, Speed has already signaled his next ambition, telling his “chat” that 50 million is only the halfway point to his ultimate goal of 100 million.
