Prada has completed its purchase of Versace, bringing two of the most influential names in Italian fashion under one roof. The company confirmed the move on Tuesday, marking a major shift in the luxury landscape and signaling a new chapter for both brands.
The price tag is about one point three eight billion dollars, which is far below the two billion dollars that Capri Holdings paid when it bought Versace in 2018. The difference shows how much Versace struggled in recent years. Sales slowed, and Capri Holdings saw similar challenges across its other labels, including Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo. The sale gives Capri Holdings room to reduce its debt, which its chief executive John Idol said will strengthen the business going forward.
For Prada, this acquisition broadens its reach at a time when competition among global luxury groups is intense. The company already controls Prada and Miu Miu. Adding Versace gives it another major name with a strong history, a loyal following, and a distinct visual identity. Prada is positioned to go head to head with conglomerates like the French group LVMH, which owns some of the most powerful brands in the world.
Versace has always stood apart. Known for bold glamour, rich color, and the Medusa head, the label helped define an entire era of Italian fashion. Much of that legacy was shaped by Donatella Versace, who took over after the death of her brother Gianni in 1997. She led the brand for twenty seven years before stepping down earlier this year. Her exit closed a long and emotional chapter, and the brand shifted to the leadership of Dario Vitale, who came from Miu Miu.
Under Capri Holdings, Versace tried to move from its ornate style toward something more minimal. Prices rose even as the identity grew less clear. The result was a brand that felt caught between its past and its future. Prada believes the potential is still there, but bringing it out will take time. The group chief executive Andrea Guerra said the journey will be long and will need discipline and patience.
