The first official trailer for Michael, the long-awaited biopic of music icon Michael Jackson, has finally arrived, offering a glimpse into the rise and complexity of the King of Pop.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and starring Jackson’s nephew Jaafar Jackson, the Lionsgate production traces the singer’s journey from his Jackson 5 beginnings to his defining solo superstardom. The trailer teases moments inside the recording studio with Quincy Jones, played by Kendrick Sampson, soundtracked by unmistakable hits like “Thriller” and “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’.”
The film, penned by Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Logan, aims to capture both the genius and the humanity behind the legend. “Michael’s life was complicated,” producer Graham King explained earlier this year. “As a filmmaker, I aim to humanize but not sanitize.”
An ensemble cast supports Jaafar’s debut, including Colman Domingo as patriarch Joe Jackson, Nia Long as matriarch Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as longtime attorney John Branca. Laura Harrier portrays Motown trailblazer Suzanne de Passe, with Kat Graham as Diana Ross.
Michael has weathered multiple delays since production wrapped in May 2024. Originally slated for an April 2025 release, the film was pushed back following reshoots last summer, eventually landing on an April 2026 theatrical debut. Rumors swirled that the project would be split into two films, though the new trailer suggests a single feature.
The film’s tone and portrayal of Jackson’s life have already drawn attention. Reports surfaced that the screenplay avoids detailing the late star’s legal controversies, focusing instead on his artistry, family ties, and relentless drive. Director Fuqua, known for Training Day and The Equalizer, brings a sharp cinematic style to a story that continues to fascinate and divide audiences.
Backed by a reported $155 million budget, Michael arrives amid renewed interest in music biopics, following the mixed box-office performances of similar projects this year. Whether it delivers redemption, revelation, or nostalgia, Michael promises to reintroduce one of pop’s most enigmatic figures to a new generation, through the eyes of his own bloodline
