Meghan Markle is opening up about how she balances her roles as a business leader and a mother of two. Speaking at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, D.C., the Duchess of Sussex shared insights into managing her lifestyle brand As Ever while raising her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
During the conversation titled Next Level Influence: A Conversation With Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, Fortune’s Editor-in-Chief Alyson Shontell asked Meghan how she decides where to focus her attention as the head of a small team. Meghan explained that teamwork and prioritizing balance are essential. “You’re only as solid as the people around you,” she said. “I also want the life-work balance, if such a thing exists. I’ll chaperone a first-grade field trip, then rush back to finish meetings.”
The Duchess, 44, described As Ever as both a reflection of her personal style and a serious business venture. “I love the creative part, but the operational side is so key,” she noted, emphasizing her hands-on approach to every detail.
In the same discussion, Meghan mentioned that she always makes time for her children, even when her schedule is packed. After recent trips to Paris and New York City, she flew home to California for just one day to see Archie, 6, and Lilibet, 4. “Everyone thought I went straight from Paris to New York,” she said with a laugh. “But I told them, ‘No, I need to see my babies.’”
The Duchess also touched on her evolving professional life, including the next phase of her Netflix partnership and the possibility of a third season of With Love, Meghan. Appearing solo at the event, Meghan followed a busy week in New York with Prince Harry, where the couple attended World Mental Health Day events and met with friends such as Serena Williams, Ed Sheeran, and Gloria Steinem.
Earlier this year, Meghan told PEOPLE that it was meaningful for her children to visit her on set during filming for her Netflix series. “I hope that when they’re older, they feel proud that they were part of the beginning of this with me,” she said.
Through her ventures and public appearances, Meghan continues to model how she integrates career ambition with motherhood, always striving for that elusive sense of balance.
