Denzel Washington's storied career has long been defined by critically acclaimed performances and collaborations with some of the most respected filmmakers in the industry. Yet, in promoting Spike Lee's latest film Highest 2 Lowest, the two-time Academy Award winner offered candid reflections on a more practical side of his journey: the jobs taken out of necessity rather than passion. Washington recalled a piece of advice from his mother: "Do what you gotta do, so that you can do what you want to do – it's not the other way around."

He admitted that during the mid-1990s, with four children to provide for, he accepted certain roles primarily to support his family. "More than a couple for the kids and the wife, and the house, and the bank, and everybody else," he said, playfully sidestepping specifics. Despite his modest framing, the period also produced enduring hits such as Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, and The Pelican Brief.

Now reunited with Spike Lee for their fifth collaboration, Washington plays David King, a New York music mogul whose life is upended by a kidnapping gone wrong. The plot reimagines Akira Kurosawa's 1963 classic High and Low, adapted from Evan Hunter's King's Ransom. When King learns the abducted child is not his own but the son of his chauffeur, played by Jeffrey Wright, his moral resolve is tested. The film explores the clash between personal responsibility, legacy, and commercial ambition.

In subtle ways, the character mirrors elements of Washington and Lee themselves; both are cultural icons grappling with how technology and shifting industry norms affect their crafts. While Lee has embraced new distribution methods, including streaming premieres, King in the film is depicted as wary of AI-generated music and social media's influence.

The production incorporated pieces inspired by Lee's real art collection, with replicas of works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Tim Okamura, and Kehinde Wiley lending authenticity.
