Ray J has opened up about the emotional toll Whitney Houston’s death has had on him, describing it as a haunting experience that continues to weigh heavily on his heart. In a recent sit-down with former NFL star Cam Newton, Ray J spoke candidly about the lingering pain and the rumors that have followed him for over a decade.
Whitney Houston passed away in February 2012, and at the time, there was widespread speculation about who was with her in her final moments. Ray J, who had a close and reportedly romantic relationship with the legendary singer, was one of the names the public speculated about. But he made it clear during the interview that he was not with her when she died and firmly denied having anything to do with the tragic event. “That’s the biggest lie I’ve ever heard,” he said. “It’s so haunting to me… to be painted as something I’m not.”
Addressing long-standing rumors that the two used drugs together, Ray J denied ever doing hard drugs with Whitney. He admitted, however, that he tried hard drugs for the first time after her death, describing the period that followed as one of confusion, grief, and emotional breakdown. “I tried hard drugs for the first time after that,” he shared. “It messed me up. I was in a dark place, and I didn’t know how to deal with it.”
He also recalled being blocked from going up to Whitney’s hotel room the night she died, only being allowed in much later after law enforcement cleared the area for family. According to Ray J, the confusion surrounding another person named Ray, who was present that night, helped fuel false reports that he had something to do with her passing. That misidentification, he says, snowballed into cruel speculation that has haunted him ever since.
Throughout the conversation, Ray J spoke emotionally about his bond with Whitney, describing her as one of the most important people in his life. He said they had plans to attend Clive Davis’s annual pre-Grammy party together and publicly acknowledge their relationship that night.
