Bill Cosby is mourning the death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, his longtime on-screen son from The Cosby Show, who drowned in Costa Rica at age 54. The incident struck a painful chord for Cosby, evoking memories of his own son's violent death nearly three decades ago.

Warner was swept away by strong currents while swimming near Cocles Beach on July 20. According to Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Agency, bystanders pulled him to shore, and the Red Cross attempted CPR. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The national police later confirmed asphyxia due to drowning as the official cause of death.

Cosby, now 88, was notified shortly after the tragedy. His spokesperson, Andrew Wyatt, told People magazine that the news brought him back to 1997 when his son, Ennis Cosby, was fatally shot during a robbery attempt in Los Angeles. Ennis, just 27 at the time, was changing a tire when he was killed.

"It was like the same call all over again," Wyatt said. "Bill said he never stopped being a father to Malcolm or the rest of the cast." Bill Cosby remained in contact with Warner throughout the years. In a phone interview with CBS News' Jericka Duncan, Cosby said, "He knew his lines. He always showed up prepared, even when he was just a teenager."

Cosby also reached out to Phylicia Rashad, who played his TV wife, following Warner's death. Wyatt said the pair spent hours reminiscing. "Everybody's leaving," Cosby told The Post, noting that a childhood friend had also died recently.

Actress Tracee Ellis Ross joined others in honoring Warner. In an Instagram post, she wrote, "My heart is so so sad. What an actor and friend you were: warm, gentle, thoughtful. You made the world a brighter place."

His legacy as Theo Huxtable remains firmly etched in pop culture, and for Bill Cosby, it is also a deeply personal loss that mirrors his own family's tragedy. Warner is survived by his family, fans, and co-stars who knew him as more than just a character but a brother, son, and dedicated artist.
