On May 5, 2025, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City hosted the annual Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year’s event honored 300 years of Black fashion and dandyism, drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion. The gala also marked the opening of the Costume Institute’s first exhibition solely devoted to designers of color.

The evening was co-chaired by Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair. Despite James’s absence due to a knee injury, his wife, Savannah James, attended on his behalf. The event featured a host committee including Doechii and Ayo Edebiri.

The dress code, “Tailored for You,” encouraged attendees to showcase personalized and culturally resonant fashion. Rihanna revealed her third pregnancy in a Marc Jacobs ensemble, while Zendaya turned heads in a Louis Vuitton zoot suit. Diana Ross wore an 18-foot train embroidered with her family’s names, and Whoopi Goldberg dazzled in a sequin-studded Thom Browne creation. Other standout appearances included André 3000 with a grand piano accessory and Ayo Edebiri paying homage to her father’s fashion.

South African singer Tyla captivated attendees with a vintage Hollywood-inspired look. She wore a custom Jacquemus gown featuring dark-blue embellished pinstripes and a matching floor-length cape, reminiscent of a crisp white button-down shirt. Styled by Law Roach, the ensemble was accessorized with over 30 carats of Pandora diamonds, including a bespoke diamond-set monocle. Tyla debuted a blonde pixie cut styled involuminous pin curls, completing her transformation with a sultry smoky eye and tonal red lips, channeling icons like Josephine Baker and Dorothy Dandridge.

Inside the event, music legends Stevie Wonder and Usher delivered surprise performances that electrified the A-list audience. Introduced by co chair Colman Domingo, Usher performed his hits wearing designs by Willy Chavarria, while Wonder took the stage in a sophisticated Sergio Hudson suit, performing classics like “Sir Duke” and “Superstition.”
