The landscape of professional wrestling shifted forever on Saturday as John Cena officially retired from in-ring competition. The 17-time World Champion concluded his legendary 24-year career at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C., closing the book on a “farewell tour” that has spanned the entire year.

In a symbolic passing of the torch, Cena’s final match saw him square off against the “Ring General,” Gunther. The match was a grueling, physical encounter that highlighted Cena’s “Never Give Up” resilience one last time. However, in a shocking conclusion that left the Capital One Arena in stunned silence, Cena submitted to Gunther’s sleeper hold. It marked the first time Cena had tapped out in over 21 years. His last submission loss dating back to a 2004 match against Kurt Angle. Rather than a sign of defeat, many fans interpreted his final smile into the camera as an act of peace and acceptance.

Following the bell, the atmosphere turned celebratory and emotional. The WWE locker room emptied as superstars from across generations, including Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk, entered the ring to pay their respects. In a touching gesture, both champions handed Cena their belts, allowing the man who carried the company for two decades to wear the gold one final time. Even WWE Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque appeared, though he was met with playful “boos” from fans who weren’t ready to see their hero go.

Cena’s retirement follows a 36-date farewell tour in 2025 that featured high-profile clashes against old rivals like Randy Orton and new stars like Gunther. During the tour at WrestleMania 41, Cena made history by defeating Cody Rhodes to win his 17 th World Championship, officially breaking the long-standing record he shared with “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair.

Before exiting the arena for the last time, Cena performed the traditional wrestler’s farewell by leaving his trademark sneakers, wristbands, and “Never Give Up” towel in the center of the ring. Addressing the camera for a final moment, he simply said, “It’s been a pleasure serving you all these years. Thank you.” While Cena has signed a five- year ambassador contract with WWE, his time as an active competitor has officially reached its “The Time is Now” conclusion.
