Indiana Pacers rookie Kam Jones was arrested in Indianapolis after allegedly leading police on a short chase while speeding to practice. Authorities said the 23-year-old guard told officers he was running late when they stopped him.

According to the Indiana State Police, Jones was driving erratically on Interstate 65 shortly before 10 a.m. on Monday, October 20. Troopers said the Marquette University standout failed to pull over when they attempted to stop him, instead continuing for a brief distance before coming to a halt.

Local outlets WTHR-TV and Fox 59 reported that Jones was taken into custody and booked at the Marion County Jail on preliminary charges of misdemeanor reckless driving and felony resisting law enforcement.Court documents obtained by the stations stated that an Indiana state trooper saw Jones driving a black Cadillac at 90 miles per hour in a 50-mile-per-hour zone. Police said the vehicle was weaving through traffic, changing lanes quickly, and following other cars too closely.

“I certainly know that there was a fully marked Indiana State Police car with red and blue lights on behind him and sirens to try to pull him over and he didn’t stop,” Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine told Fox 59.

After finally stopping, Jones reportedly told troopers he was unaware of his speed and was simply hurrying to Pacers practice. The Indiana State Police have not yet responded to a request for comment from PEOPLE.

The Pacers released a brief statement acknowledging awareness of the incident. “We are in the process of gathering additional information and will not have any further comment on the matter at this time,” the team said.

Jones, who was selected in the second round of the 2025 NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs before being traded to Indiana, has not yet made his official debut for the Pacers. He is currently recovering from a back injury and is expected to start the season with the team’s G League affiliate, the Noblesville Boom, according to WTHR.

The rookie guard gained national attention during his college career at Marquette, where he was known for his scoring ability and leadership. His recent arrest, however, casts a shadow over his transition into professional basketball as the Pacers continue to gather details about the incident.
