The Vatican has issued a firm and detailed reaffirmation of monogamy, expressing concern over the increasing promotion of polyamory and other nontraditional unions in several parts of the world. The new document, signed by Pope Leo XIV, responds to what the Church describes as a rising cultural tide that questions the exclusivity and permanence of marriage. It highlights that in many Western societies, public forms of non monogamous relationships have become more common, challenging long standing Christian teaching on marriage. According to the text, the Vatican felt compelled to revisit the foundations of marital doctrine following consultations with Roman Catholic bishops in Africa, where polygamy remains a significant pastoral concern and was discussed extensively during synods in 2023 and 2024.

The doctrinal note emphasizes that polygamy, adultery, and polyamory are rooted in the illusion that emotional intensity can be sustained by shifting relationships. It argues that contemporary society is witnessing troubling patterns, including rising divorce rates, fragile unions, and the normalization of adulterous behavior. Titled "One Flesh In Praise of Monogamy," the document outlines the Church's long held conviction that marriage is a stable, lifelong, exclusive relationship between one man and one woman. Cardinal Victor Manuel Fernández, head of the Vatican's doctrine office, explained that the document seeks to articulate the theological and moral basis for the Church's commitment to monogamy, describing it as a union characterized by total belonging and mutual self giving.

The note also marks an important development in the Church's teaching on marital sexuality. It reaffirms that the purpose of marital intimacy is both unitive and procreative, but stresses that the unitive dimension is not limited to the intention or possibility of having children. Catholic doctrine traditionally upholds that sex within marriage reflects divine love by strengthening the emotional and spiritual bond between spouses. While the Church maintains its prohibition on artificial contraception, the new document underscores that the essence of marital unity stands at the heart of Catholic understanding. Ultimately, the text positions monogamy as a foundation for emotional stability, social coherence, and a deeper spiritual vocation, presenting the exclusive union of a man and woman as a vital expression of enduring human commitment.
