In her new memoir, _107 Days_, released September 23, Kamala Harris addresses the public scrutiny surrounding her husband Doug Emhoff’s affair during his first marriage to Kerstin Emhoff. The revelation came to light during her 2024 presidential campaign when activist Laura Loomer shared claims on social media.

Harris writes that she was aware of the affair before marrying Doug and had disclosed it during her vetting for vice president. She acknowledged that by marrying her and taking a public role at her side, Doug had “knowingly put himself in the line of fire,” while his former wife, children, and the teacher involved had not. She expressed her frustration at the renewed attention on her stepchildren and Kerstin, saying, “I hated what was happening… that all of them would be dragged back into a miserable time.”

Despite the scrutiny, Harris remained focused on her campaign, asking Doug to handle the situation publicly. She described him as handling i “like the mensch that he is,” taking responsibility and expressing regret. Kerstin also spoke out, highlighting the strength of their blended family: “He is a great father to our kids, continues to be a great friend to me and I am really proud of the warm and supportive blended family Doug, Kamala, and I have built together.”

The memoir also shares lighter glimpses into family life. Harris reveals the Secret Service code names of her family: while she is Pioneer, Doug’s code name is Playmaker, and their children Cole and Ella chose Pirate and Pickle, respectively. She notes, “The kids… were allowed to choose their own names, so long as they started with P,” reflecting the playful and close-knit dynamic of their household.  _107 Days_ also explores Harris’s 107-day presidential campaign, including the significance of her signature pantsuits and her preparations for the 2024 Democratic National Convention, supported by both family and unexpected mentors.

Through the memoir, Harris balances personal and political life, offering insight into the challenges of campaigning while navigating the realities of public scrutiny.
