Lil Nas X is mourning the loss of his mother Tameka Hill.
The “Call Me By Your Name” rapper, whose real name is Montero Hill, announced his mom’s death in an Instagram post on Saturday.
“RIP TO THE BADDEST EVER!” Lil Nas X wrote alongside photos of Hill. “LOVE U FOREVER MOMMY. this one’s gonna hurt.”
The cause of death was not immediately revealed. Entertainment Weekly reached out to representatives for Lil Nas X for comment.
Before her death, Lil Nas X had previously opened up about his tumultuous relationship with his mother. Following the success of his breakthrough hit “Old Town Road,” he shared that he had been navigating newfound fame while trying to help his mother get into rehab.
“She’s an addict so we don’t have the closest relationship,” he told Variety in January 2020. “Even trying to get her better — things didn’t quite work out. But there’s still love.”
On his debut album MONTERO, he addressed the rift between him and Hill on his song “DEAD RIGHT NOW.” He sang about her struggle with addiction, saying “Mama told me she was gonna stop f---in’ around with that needle / Told me she’d be clean but I’m knowin’ that her ass is a deceiver.”
The Grammy winner also revealed their strained interactions, rapping about some of the insults she threw at him. In his lyrics, he wrote, “When she get drunk, she hit me up, man, with a fever, like, woah / ‘You ain’t even all that pretty, you ain’t even all that ... / You ain’t helpin’ out with me, God won’t forgive you.”
And Lil Nas X has been dealing with his own personal issues, having shared his experience going to rehab and taking care of his mental health.
“I’ve been in rehab for a few months, and since then I’ve been, you know, back at home, whether it’s in Atlanta with my family or in Los Angeles with myself and friends and whatnot, and trying to ground myself down to earth and get out of my head,” he shared in an Instagram video in June.
The “Industry Baby” rapper had been arrested in August 2025 after being found walking nearly nude in Los Angeles. He was charged with three counts of battery against a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer. He was admitted to a mental health diversion program in March, meaning his case will be dropped if he completes his treatment and obeys all laws for the next two years.
