Carole Gist is reflecting on the challenges she faced before making history as the first Black woman to win the Miss USA title.

During an appearance on 7 News Detroit on April 13, Gist, now 56, opened up about her difficult teenage years, revealing that she experienced homelessness while in high school. She described a complicated family environment, explaining that both her mother and biological father struggled with substance abuse, which contributed to instability at home. She later shared that her mother eventually sought help through a treatment program.

Looking back, Gist recalled the emotional toll of that period, saying she grappled with frustration and confusion as a teenager. She questioned why her parents were unable to provide the care she needed. At a certain point, she decided to rely on her own determination, believing that she had to take control of her circumstances and find a way forward.

The Detroit native described how she managed to get by during that time, often moving between temporary places. She spent some nights staying with friends, working on school assignments and finding brief moments of stability. At other times, she slept in her car, doing what she could to maintain a sense of normalcy despite the uncertainty.

Gist also shared how she handled daily routines while facing these challenges. She would arrive at school early, using access to athletic facilities to prepare for the day. By going in before activities began, she found a way to shower, brush her teeth, and get ready for classes, even when she had spent the night in her car.

Despite the difficulties, she remained focused on her goals. Gist explained that her priorities at the time included maintaining strong academic performance, pursuing higher education, and ultimately graduating without financial burden. These ambitions helped her stay disciplined and motivated, even when her circumstances were unstable.

She described this focus as a kind of mental filter that allowed her to block out distractions and remain committed to her future. By concentrating on her education and long-term aspirations, Gist was able to push through adversity and create opportunities for herself.

Her journey from homelessness as a teenager to becoming a historic pageant winner highlights her resilience and determination, offering insight into the challenges she overcame on her path to success.
