The square-jawed action star who turned discipline and determination into a defining screen presence, Chuck Norris has died at the age of 86, his family confirmed Friday.
Known for his commanding role as Cordell Walker in the long-running television series "Walker, Texas Ranger," Norris became a cultural symbol of justice delivered with grit, restraint and his trademark roundhouse kick. His family shared the news in a heartfelt statement, noting he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones.
"To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength," the statement read. "To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, and the heart of our family."
Born Carlos Ray Norris on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma, his early years were marked by hardship and self-doubt. He often spoke candidly about his struggles with shyness and a difficult home life shaped by his father's alcoholism. Those formative challenges would later fuel his drive for self-improvement.
After high school, Norris joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in South Korea, where he began studying martial arts. What started as a personal pursuit evolved into a lifelong passion. Returning to the United States, he competed in tournaments and eventually became a champion, later opening karate schools that attracted celebrity students.
His friendship with Bruce Lee proved pivotal, leading to his breakout film role in "The Way of the Dragon." From there, Norris built a steady career in action cinema throughout the 1970s and 1980s, starring in films such as "Good Guys Wear Black," "An Eye for an Eye," and "Missing in Action."
Though widely recognized for his physical prowess, Norris worked to expand beyond martial arts roles, seeking to be seen as a versatile actor. That evolution found its peak in "Walker, Texas Ranger," which debuted in 1993 and ran for years in syndication success.
Off-screen, Norris was known for his faith, discipline and commitment to family. His legacy, both as a performer and cultural figure, leaves a lasting imprint on generations of fans worldwide.
