Dr. Wendy Osefo and her husband, Edward “Eddie” Osefo, have been arrested and charged in Maryland in connection with an alleged insurance fraud scheme involving a claimed home burglary and false statements to insurers and law enforcement.
According to court documents and statements from law enforcement, the Osefos reported that during a 2024 vacation to Jamaica, their Maryland home was burglarized, and more than $450,000 worth of personal property, including luxury handbags, jewelry, clothing, and shoes, was stolen. They filed multiple insurance claims based on that alleged theft.
Investigators later revealed that the burglary report had inconsistencies and the insurance claims led them to suspect the incident was staged. Authorities found no signs of forced entry or disturbance in areas through which perpetrators were claimed to have entered. Surveillance systems, home alarm logs and neighbor footage reportedly showed no activity matching a break-in during the period in question.
One of the most damaging findings, investigators say, is that Wendy Osefo was seen wearing a diamond anniversary band in social media posts and in public appearances after the date when its theft was allegedly reported. Additionally, records showed that some of the items claimed as stolen had been previously returned to retailers for refunds and were thus no longer possessions at the time of the claimed burglary.
Law enforcement also flagged internal communications in which Eddie allegedly asked Wendy whether they could “add additional high-value items” to their inventory to maximize their insurance claims. During the execution of a search warrant at their home, authorities reportedly recovered at least 15 items the couple had claimed were stolen.
Wendy Osefo faces multiple charges including insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit fraud and making false statements to police. Eddie faces a similar array of charges. Both were booked, granted bond and released shortly afterward, in accordance with Maryland court procedures. The couple has issued a statement saying they look forward to their day in court and are requesting privacy as the legal process unfolds.
