Singer, actress, and choreographer Teyana Taylor has been ordered to pay her estranged husband, former NBA player Iman Shumpert, $70,000 to cover his legal fees after a court found her in contempt. The ruling is the latest development in the couple’s ongoing and increasingly contentious divorce proceedings, which have played out both in the courtroom and in the public eye.
According to court documents, the contempt finding stemmed from allegations that Taylor violated certain court-ordered provisions related to the divorce case. While specific details of the violation remain sealed due to the sensitive nature of the proceedings, sources familiar with the matter indicate that the court determined Taylor acted in direct conflict with prior orders, prompting the sanction.
The $70,000 award represents reimbursement for Shumpert’s attorney costs incurred in addressing the alleged misconduct. The judge’s ruling emphasized that the fee payment was necessary to remedy the financial burden caused by Taylor’s actions and to ensure compliance with court procedures moving forward.
Neither Taylor nor Shumpert has publicly commented on the latest order. However, insiders suggest that tensions between the two have escalated since their separation, with disagreements over finances, property division, and custody arrangements for their two young daughters.
Taylor, known for her acclaimed music career and roles in films such as Coming 2 America, filed for divorce from Shumpert in 2023 after nearly seven years of marriage. The split initially appeared amicable, with Taylor telling fans the breakup was rooted in mutual respect. However, subsequent filings have revealed a much more adversarial dynamic, with both parties accusing the other of misconduct.
Shumpert, who won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016, has been pursuing certain financial claims against Taylor, arguing that she has attempted to sidestep agreements made during the marriage. Taylor, in turn, has alleged that Shumpert has engaged in controlling and manipulative behavior, though he has denied those claims.
